Simply Rails 2

Today I went down to Barnes & Noble and purchased Simply Rails 2 by Patrick Lenz and published by SitePoint Books. I bought this book because lately I’ve been checking out EVERY RubyOnRails book I can get my hands on from my local library and so far I’ve found Simply Rails 2 covers more content in just the right format for me, a total RubyOnRails noob. Every time I have a question, the book answers it. :D

Brightkite is a great location-based social network developed using RubyOnRails that has been designed to fill the niche in social networks and allow you to meet and communicate with friends in your area as well as view their current location. Best part is they’re based here in Denver, CO. We need more innovative companies like Brightkite in Denver.

“Brightkite is a location-based social network that enables people to take their online profiles with them into the real-world and make real-world friends. Users can see where their friends are and what they’re up to all while maintaining comprehensive degrees of privacy to non-friends. Depending on a user’s privacy setting they can also be open to meeting others nearby.”

I’m planning on porting my site over to Mephisto which runs on Rails. I’ll be using my current mediatemple (gs), gridserver, for hosting of course and I found a great tutorial for integrating mediatemple (gs) hosting, using their ruby containers, with Mephisto over at Softamade as well as a great tutorial on Running Mephisto on OSX.

So I bought my first RoR book, Agile Web Development with Rails. I’m just starting to dig into it. All my RoR resources have mentioned to me that I should get this book so I’m following there guidance. There is even a PDF version of the book available for those who prefer that option.
